Spend Your Thanksgiving With Family, Food And Football!

November 20, 2012

After carving the holiday turkey and filling your plate with the many side dishes that each family member makes it’s time for dessert. Many Americans make it a point to eat their dessert with a side of football.

This tradition of football on Thanksgiving dates back to 1934. The Lions team owner was G.A. Richards. In 1934 he moved the team from Portsmouth (OH) to Detroit.

In an attempt to bring attention to the cities newest team, Richards scheduled a Thanksgiving Day game against the reigning champions, the Bears!

Richards’ experiment of Thanksgiving paired with football was a huge success! The Lions continued to schedule an annual Thanksgiving game against the Bears until World War II broke out in 1939.

In 1945 the Lions resumed the Thanksgiving Day game. Since then the Lions have hosted a Thanksgiving game each year.

In 1966 another National Football League (NFL) team caught on to the marketing genius behind hosting a Thanksgiving Classic game. The Dallas Cowboys also play a game each year.

Finally in 2006 the NFL committee decided to add a third Thanksgiving Day game. This game would rotate to feature other teams each year in a weekly matchup.
